This opening post is a rather brief introduction. There’s a description of Desk Notes, some information about me, Charles Schifano, and a bit about what’s coming next.
Desk Notes explores the craft of writing.
Language provides the foundation of Desk Notes, but there’s no limit to the scope—updates may touch literature and history, or linger on travel and culture.
Each new post will aim to be practical and relevant—targeted on the use of language. But there will still be room for excursions, little asides, some scribbles, and plenty of haphazard observations. So don’t be surprised to find the occasional essay or review or critique. Essentially, if words are required, the subject is ripe.
Updates arrive on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you have been forwarded this introduction, you can subscribe here:
Who writes Desk Notes?
If you are just joining, I am Charles Schifano, and I’m a writer and teacher. I have taught courses on writing, the English language, and narrative technique. My group lectures focus on journalism and fiction, and I present strategies from both to improve storytelling.
Questions?

What’s next?
